From ‘Peaky Blinders’ to ‘Sons of Anarchy’, crime families have a certain streak of similarity. Tune into any one of these TV shows and the essence at its core remains the same. But ‘Gangs of London’ plays a different tune even with the same set of musical instruments. The crime family — headed by Finn Wallace (Colm Meaney) — is thrown into chaos when its patriarch is killed. Throughout the series, there's one question on his son Sean Wallace's (Joe Cole) mind: Who killed him?

Set in the heart of London, the first episode begins with one of the most bloody and brutal scenes as Sean interrogates a man hanging from the top of a skyscraper. As the man pleads him to let go, Sean pours petrol all over him and sets him alight. Blazing with fire, the man yells for help but ultimately the rope he was hanging from is cut off leading to a great fall. “What else can I do?” Sean hopelessly says while watching the man burn alive.

The series then rewinds back to events from one week back. Two young boys are ordered to commit the crime in exchange for money. Little do they know that the man they end up killing is the most powerful crime boss in London. The cold-blooded murder leads to a domino effect as the two boys race away from the scene with a bag full of money. Soon after, the Wallace family mourn their loss at Finn's funeral where Sean says everything stops until he finds out who killed his father.

Surrounded by the Dumani family — headed by Ed Dumani (Lucian Msamati) — and with a number of crime groups like the Albanian Mafia — fronted by Luan Dushaj (Orli Shuka) — along with Kurdish freedom fighters, Pakistani drug cartel, and Welsh travelers, there's a lot at stake. Perhaps, the one man who seems to lend a helping hand in all the mess is Elliot Finch (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù) but turns out to be an undercover cop. Can Sean trust Elliot? Who will help him in this mammoth task? Will he ever find out who ordered the hit on his father? The mystery continues as the next few episodes unroll.

Shedding light on the dilemma in Sean's mind, director Gareth Evans told Entertainment Weekly: “Sean has found himself in a situation now where he is not only mourning the death of his father, who he reveres and hero-worships, but is about to fill his shoes, while the rest of the city is circling around him like vultures,” He added: “He's caught in a situation where he’s trying to keep the engine running in terms of the business empire, but at the same time, trying to get to the bottom of who is that killed his father.”

The 10-part series — which first released on Sky Atlantic in the UK on April 23, 2020 — got many fans curious and they had different explanations for the unanswered questions. "Okay #GangsOfLondon is absolutely CLASS!!! But I need a question answered - why hire a kid to kill Finn Wallace if you had the Danish militia at your disposal who then went and killed the kid? Doesn’t make sense to me," one fan said and another posted, "I reckon Ed Dumani is behind the murder of Finn Wallace #GangsofLondon." One viewer even went on to post, "Watching #GangsOfLondon so who do people think ordered the hit on Finn Wallace then?? I'm going with possibly The wife as she's got motive or the Son Billy cos maybe he knew about his Dad's affair!!"
